There are several good reasons for servicing a transmission. When a shop performs a service, it also gets the opportunity to inspect the vehicle for other potential problems. The customer gets a transmission that will operate properly and therefore longer, and may avoid an expensive repair due to premature component failure.

Transmission Performance
Fresh transmission fluid with the proper levels of additives replaces old fluid with depleted additives. The old argument is that oil never wears out; however, the additives that oil manufacturers add to the oil, to give it certain properties and qualities, do.
Inspection
Removing the pan allows the technician to inspect the contents of the pan fully for telltale signs of potential trouble. All contaminant does not get trapped by the filter. Contaminant also may settle in the pan and this contaminant can be "read" by a competent technician.
The condition of the fluid also can indicate potential failure. Having the car on the rack also allows the technician to inspect the entire transmission for other problems, including leaks at points other than the pan gasket, connector and wiring problems and road damage.
Contamination Removal
Transmissions generate contamination as they wear. These contaminants interfere with the operation of valve bodies and solenoids and accelerate the wear of hard parts. Replacing the filter and cleaning the sump pan removes contaminants from the system, reducing the possibility of component failure.
Leak Points
Removing the pan presents the opportunity to change the pan gasket. A pan gasket will get brittle over time because of the environment in which it operates. Replacing an old, brittle gasket with a fresh, pliable gasket provides a longer-lasting seal and eliminates a potential leak point.
